Caption: Climbing Mt. Washington: The Grade here is 1,080 feet to the mile, and the trestle thirty feet above the rocks. Below yawns the mighty maw of the great gulf, The August of the valley yields to the November of the heights. The tree line is passed; nothing appears save frost-splintered rocks, with dull mosses and hardy alpine flowers. The crests of neighboring peaks are all about, grand and awful.
